2008 sees global stock markets record unprecedented falls

31 December 2008

The FTSE 100 was down 30.9% over 2008, finishing the year at 4,434.  This was the worst annual fall since the index was created in 1984, substantially exceeding 2002's loss of 24.5%.  The FTSE All Share fell by 33%, its worst annual fall since losing 55% in 1974.

The S&P 500, the US's broadest index fell 41% during 2008, its worst year since a drop of 47.1 per cent in 1931 during the Great Depression.

The picture across the rest of Europe was also gloomy - Germany’s Xetra Dax fell 40%, its worst annual performance in its 20-year history and the CAC 40 in Paris was down 42%.
