Definition of reducing balanceReducing balance A method of depreciation that applies a constant percentage reduction first to the cost of the asset and subsequently to the written down value. In this way reducing amounts are charged periodically to the income statement. Arguably, this method results in truer values for the depreciated asset, but as it is more complicated it is less common than equal annual instalments.
